H.O.P.E.'s 9th annual "Cause for Paws" dinner auction

HOPES 9th annual "Cause for Paws" dinner auction

Posted and Hosted by:
H.O.P.E. Safehouse
When:
Saturday, May 3, 2008
Where:
Country Club
Racine, Wisconsin

Before you read any further, I want you to know that they are asking for a donation for their 9th annual "Cause for Paws" dinner auction. Without your support; their goal for a new, larger safe haven for unwanted, abandoned animals will not be possible.

I and they hope you will consider donating an item for their auction.

Because of the generosity of donators like you, they were able to raise more than $25,000 towards their new building last year!!

PLEASE NOTE
H.O.P.E. has NO paid staff and is run solely by volunteers!!
100% of all donations go directly to the care of their animals
and finding them permanent loving homes.

Donations can be most anything, but they must be new items. Some examples are: pet items, artwork, photography, gift certificates, home decor, kids items, jewelry, time shares, sporting tickets, autographed items (perfect for the authors who read this!! hint hint), basically anything that can be auctioned off.

Do you know someone who owns a business?
PLEASE PLEASE PASS THIS ON.

This is especially great for local artists, businesses, etc. because it gets your name out there. They are going to list the company name or display business cards if they can.

REMEMBER
ALL DONATIONS ARE
TAX DEDUCTIBLE!!!!

Any donations can be dropped off or mailed to:

HOPE Safehouse
1911 Taylor Avenue
Racine, WI 53403

or if you live in the area
they may be able to pick up your donation by calling
262-634-4571.

They have a Myspace page and the link is below.
If you wish to attend please contact them by mail, phone or
on their Myspace page.

Reading Is Fundamental

I know a lot of people have probably heard about this organization, but few know when or how it started.

It started in 1966 by former teacher Margaret McNamara and some school volunteers to collect, distribute, and to motivate children to read.

On their website you can learn the full story, how to become a volunteer, corporate sponsorship, the board of directors, jobs, annual reports, and so so much more.

I am still amazed that so many people in this country still do not know how to read or like to read (I have found that most of the people who do not enjoy to read usually have trouble reading--at least in my life).

There is not a job out there that does not require some form of reading, either for the job application or on the job itself. It just does not make sense that parents do not do more to know if their child reads or how well they read. Then again most adults only read magazines about entertainment, girly magazines, car magazines, etc. or tabloids. When was the last time you picked up a book to read?

As adults it is up to us to make sure the children in the world learn how to read, how to fill out an application, and read for both pleasure and to better themselves. They learn by example more than anything else.

READING REALLY IS FUNDAMENTAL

Illiteracy is a problem that everyone can help eliminate.

Children's Organ Transplant Association--COTA

I was checking out The Peace Fund website and they had a link to COTA; so, I decided to check it out. I did not know there was an organization like this one.

Briefly: This is a charity that helps needy children and young adults (and their families) who need organ transplants. They will help with fundraising and family support. On their website you can learn more about the organization, the children, donate, become a COTA patient, volunteer, become a COTA transplant professional and much more.

If you know someone in need or are in need yourself please check out this website. If you can volunteer or donate please do. I know that everyone can not always afford to donate (like me); so, since I can not afford to donate I hope doing blogs like to get the information and weblinks out help in some small way.

Briefly about The Peace Fund: This charity was founded by actor Adrian Paul (best known probably from Highlander: The Series) to help children worldwide. They also work with other charities to benefit children. If you want to learn more click on the link below.

First Book Organization--gives low income kids free books

First Book gives low income children a chance to read and own new books. This organization has been around since 1992. First Book has distributed over 50 million books nation wide in over 3,000 communities.

***A personal note here--We have 2 in my neck of the woods and they both came in this week to the store I work at and were able to purchase many books for the children to enjoy thanks to our wonderful customers this past Christmas. Borders, Inc. and Waldenbooks raised 1.1 million dollars during the 2007 Christmas season. This was the third year that First Book and Borders, Inc. teamed up to raise money. To any of my local Waldenbooks customers that donated I thank you from all of us.***

First Book is looking to go international.

If you go to their website there are tabs for donating, getting involved, receiving books, corporate involvement and more. You can learn the full story of the company and some of the goals they have in mind.
